Learning Commons Enabling Works

The Enabling Works Contract for the Learning Commons has achieved Substantial Completion within Time, Cost and Quality. Delivered by local contractor, McNamara Construction, the works involved the demolition and site clearance of a number of existing properties to pave the way for the University Learning Commons Project.
Planning permission for the Learning Commons was confirmed in summer 2023 for the site which is in the heart of the campus. The project will offer a new, high-tech space for students, for research and for staff, as well as providing access to books and information.
The building, designed by RKD Architects, the Learning Commons will range in height up to six storeys with study space, including quiet, individual and collaborative areas; a makerspace and scholarship centre enabling digital creativity and storage of the Library’s book and journal collections, many of which will be stored in a Bookbot or high-density, automated storage system.
