Biography

Stephen is a senior lecturer in civil engineering at NUI Galway. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 1997 with a 1st class honours degree in Civil Engineering and then spent two further years in TCD completing an MSc in Civil Engineering by research. The research was funded by the Irish EPA and focused on the development of a water quality model of Wexford Harbour. He moved to Galway in 1999 where he worked as a Project Engineer with Aquafact International Services Ltd for 2 years before taking up his current role as a lecturer at NUI Galway in 2002. He also began studying for a PhD part-time in 2002 and completed in 2010.

Stephen teaches a number of hydraulic/water engineering modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level and was programme director for the MSc in Water Resources Engineering. His research expertise is the numerical and physical modelling of surface water bodies with particular focus on the modelling of tidal currents, waves, water quality, coastal flooding, tidal/wave energy and aquaculture. He leads the Marine Modelling Group and is a research leader in NUI Galway's Ryan Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy Research and in
MaREI, the SFI-funded national centre for energy, climate and marine research.

Research Interests

Main research areas include:

Stephen's research expertise is in physical and computer modelling of surface waterbodies (rivers, lakes, estuaries, seas and oceans) including topics such as:

- hydrodynamic modelling (e.g. tides, storm surge, waves)
- water quality modelling (e.g. nutrients, sediment, algae)
- aquaculture modelling (e.g. hydrodynamics, sea lice, jellyfish)
- wave/tidal energy (e.g. resource assessment, device impacts)
- coastal flooding (e.g. flood inundation, urban flooding)
- CFD modelling of hydraulic systems (e.g. tidal turbines, drinking water resrevoirs, sewers)

To date, Stephen has completed 20+ research projects funded by national and EU agencies and industry. He has published 38 peer-reviewed journal papers and and 40 peer-reviewed conference papers. He has supervised 5 PhDs and 2 MEngScs to completion and is currently supervising 4 PhDs and an MEngSc. The high quality of Stephen's research has been recognised both nationally and internationally having won awards for research excellence and innovation from Engineers Ireland, the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK) and the Irish marine industry.
