Research Interests

In my research I'm interested (and I say this with a definite nod to Michel Foucault) in how we have come to be who and what we are, as subjects, as humans, right here and right now. Assuming we are not content to be who and what we are (and if we are content, then so be it), then the aim of inquiry is to explore the possibility of being otherwise. Easier said than done, not least because the 'we' invoked by notions of 'the subject' and 'the human' is simultaneously singular and multiple. Moreover, we are more or less conditioned by language and discourse, which is one reason for my long-term interest in (histories of) childhood (another reason is that I'm a parent). We also exist in relation with human and non-human others. So, we exist in relation, and we exist within enclosures of language and discourse, but at the same time, we are enclosure, because we embody language and discourse, and this colors how we see, how we think, what we do, and by default, what we don't or can't see, think and do. We can't escape enclosure, because we can't escape our self, and we can't escape being-in-the-world, but that doesn't mean we can't imagine other worlds that take us beyond enclosure and thus beyond who and what we presently are. To think and imagine ourselves otherwise is a step towards putting thought into practice, which is why I'm interested in the imbrication of aesthetics and politics, especially in the form of engaged artistic practices that are informed by speculative inquiry. Put all of this together, and that's my project.
