Biography

I am a Post -Doctoral Researcher on Children’s Participation in Tusla with the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre at NUI Galway. This project is part of a wider three year research study being undertaken in the UCFRC on the Development and Mainstreaming Programme for Prevention, Partnership and Family Support (PPFS Programme) Tusla. The Children’s Participation work package is designed to explore the efficacy of a programme of action to embed children and young people’s participation within the Agency. My key research interest lies in the topic of Participation and Participatory Research Methods with particular emphasis on how vulnerable and marginalised groups can participate in decision making about their health care and service provision. The research projects I have worked on have included marginalized groups from across a variety of settings and using a mixture of participatory research methods. My current research focus is on children and young people's participation in Tusla services and how their voices are heard. My other research interest is in Community Participation in Primary Care and involving stakeholders in research projects to inform primary care service delivery. This focus has been underpinned by implementation theory and on how research can inform practice and national policy. I am a member of the Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) research group at UL which has expertise in participatory health research with socially excluded communities and I am a facilitator of a PPI group at NUI Galway who are involved in advising on research funding proposals and research methodologies for university project proposals in development.
My research experience and scholarship crosses the fields of family support and child protection, implementation science, patient and public involvement, participatory research methods and disability and is coupled with a long history of and contribution to voluntary service delivery.
