Biography

My research interests are concentrated in two areas:  literary criticism and literary translation. In the former, my current research is in the area of Classical Receptions in Hispanic Literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, particularly Spanish and Latin American versions of the myth of Iphigenia. The publication in 2014 of Edith Hall’s Adventures with Iphigenia in Taurus (Oxford UP) reflects a renewed interest in this myth within the anglophone world of Reception Studies. My publications since 2012 have analysed the political uses and abuses of the myth in Spanish, Mexican and Central American contexts. My output as a literary translator in recent years has focused on the translation of Galician Poetry, particularly the works of Chus Pato and Manuel Rivas. My translation of Rivas's collection 'The Disappearance of Snow' (Shearsman, 2013) was shortlisted for the Popescu Prize in Poetry Translation. In March 2019, my translation of 'The Mouth of the Earth' was also published by Shearsman Books. My ongoing practice as a literary translator forms an essential part of my teaching contributions to BA and MA  programmes in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. I also coordinate the international Research Group, Crosswinds. Irish and Galician Poetry and Translation  https://mooreinstitute.ie/research-group/crosswinds-irish-and-galician-poetry-and-translation/ The Crosswinds research group provides an international platform for my translation publications and a framework for international collaborations.   I am a published poet with three collections published by Salmon Poetry. I received an Artist's Bursary form the Arts Council of Ireland in 2018.

Research Interests

My research interests centre on Spanish, Mexican and Central American poetry of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with a special interest in Nicaraguan poetry. Other areas of interest include political poetry from Central America; women's political participation in the region and popular culture. My most recent publiciations are in the area of Classical Reception Studies, analysing adaptations of the Iphigenia myth in twentieth century Mexican and Central American literatures. I have also translated two collections of contemporary Mexican poetry, and poetry by contremporary Galician writers Manuel Rivas and Chus Pato.

  Description

Coordination of the international Research Group "Crosswinds. Irish and Galician Poetry and Translation." The Crosswinds research group provides an international platform for my translation publications and a framework for international collaborations.

Teaching Interests

My current teaching responsibilities are in the areas of Spanish Language, Translation Studies, Hispanic Cultural Studies and Creative Writing. My language teaching focuses on two areas: I teach ex-Intermediate Second Year students, tutoring them in grammar, and working on their writing skills in Spanish in preparation for their year abroad; I also lead translation workshops on the practice of Literary Translation with MA students, and contribute to the Translation Strand of the BA in Global Languages. . In the area of Hispanic Cultural Studies I deliver courses in Spanish, Mexican and Central American literatures; Cultural expressions and representations of Mexican identity; Spanish poetry and art of the 1920s and 30s. I am currently supervising two PhD theses: one on Flamenco (co-supervised by a member of the Centre for World Music, University of Limerick); and one a Creative Practice PhD in Creative Writing (poetry), co-supervised by Dr Cliodhna Carney of the Dept of English.
