The Unit for Natural Language Processing (UNLP) at the Data Science Institute of the University of Galway develops methods for the efficient application of NLP approaches in real-life use cases. UNLP is funded by Research Ireland through grants for the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics and the Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in AI (CRT in AI), as well as by the EU, Enterprise Ireland and industry. Our research has a focus on areas such as knowledge graphs and ontologies, opinionated text analysis, and AI for good. Our research on knowledge graph extraction and application has been developed in the context of industry use cases, in collaboration with large enterprises such as Fidelity, Huawei, Accenture and Roche. Our LUCE framework for opinionated text analysis has been developed in the context of use cases in public health (Pandem-2 EU project) and medical device regulation (with Irish company Trinzo), among others. We have developed datasets for research in AI for good, such as for offensive meme classification (MultiOFF dataset).
