Part-Time Courses
Part-time courses for prospective mature students
These part-time Foundation Studies Diplomas are designed for mature applicants aged 22 or over who are interested in progressing to full-time undergraduate study.
Before you apply
- You must have access to a laptop or PC with a reliable WiFi connection
- Leaving Certificate Maths is desirable, or Further Education in Mathematics, along with reasonable IT skills
- Not all applicants are accepted. If you do not meet these criteria, please contact the Programme Coordinator

SFD1 Science, Technology and Engineering
Foundation Studies Diploma
For applicants interested in applying for entry to full-time Science, Engineering and IT degrees at University of Galway.
Course details:
- Duration: 26 weeks
- Schedule: Two evenings per week and two Saturdays per month (full day)
- Start date: September
Modules include:
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Mathematics and IT
- Skills for College and Career
- Academic Study Skills and Academic Writing
This course is intended for applicants planning to begin a Science, Engineering, IT or Health Sciences degree in 2027.
SFD8 Business, Law and Arts
Foundation Studies Diploma
For applicants interested in applying for entry to full-time or part-time business-related degrees at University of Galway.
Course details:
- Duration: 26 weeks
- Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays (7–10pm) and some Saturdays (10am–5pm)
Modules include:
- Accountancy and Economics
- Mathematics and Business Skills
- Information Technology
- Skills for College and Career
- Academic Study Skills and Academic Writing
Application requirements
For both programmes, you must upload:
- A passport photo
- A copy of your passport, birth certificate or marriage certificate
Fees
- €380 (standard fee)
- €60 if unemployed
If applying for the reduced fee, you must email
foundationprogrammes@universityofgalway.ie
with evidence of your Social Welfare payment or a bank statement showing payment.
Payment
The fee can be paid:
- By postal order made payable to University of Galway
- Include your name and course on the back
- Post to:
Mature Students Officer, Áras Uí Chathail, University of Galway - Must be received before 15 September 2026

- Paid on the registration date
