QQI (FETAC)
QQI (FETAC) Progression Guide 2026
A number of Undergraduate programmes in University of Galway are open on a competitive basis to students who present with a recognised QQI (FETAC or NCVA) qualification.
A number of Undergraduate programmes in University of Galway are open on a competitive basis to students who present with a recognised QQI (FETAC or NCVA) qualification. In order to be considered for a place on these programmes, students are required to have completed the requisite QQI (FETAC) Level 5 or Level 6 course and hold a minimum of five distinctions in the requisite modules. What full-time degrees are open to Further Education applicants?
University of Galway has over 220 places available for QQI/FET/ FETAC applicants across the four colleges that make up this University. Further information on the undergraduate programmes available for QQI/ FET/FETAC applicants can be found in the Quick Guide or on the individual Undergraduate course pages.
When do I apply?
Applications for admission to all full-time undergraduate degree courses are made through the CAO. Applications can be made online, or alternatively, please contact the CAO office to request a hard copy application form. Using a single application form, you may choose from the entire range of courses listed in this guide. You may apply for up to 10 courses in the Level 8 category and 10 courses in the Level 7 category.
Please note that all undergraduate degrees taught at University of Galway are Level 8 degrees.

Can I make a late application to University of Galway after 1 February?
Yes. Late applications from QQI/FET/FETAC applicants are accepted up until the closing date of 1 May 2026.
Can I use the change of mind option for University of Galway’s programmes?
Yes. The CAO online Change of Mind facility opens in early May and closes on 1 July at 5pm.
When will I know if my application has been successful?
If you are offered a place at University of Galway you will receive official notification of this from the CAO, usually in early August. The date by which you must accept your offer will be clearly stated on the CAO notification. It is essential that you are aware of the date for accepting your offer. You may accept your offer online (www.cao.ie) in the event that you are away from your address.
Your responsibility... If you change your address any time between February and the end of June you should update the CAO with your correct address.
Can I apply to Shannon College of Hotel Management as a QQI/FET/FETAC Applicant?
Applicants taking the requisite QQI/ FET/FETAC level 5 and 6 programme are welcome to apply for limited places in GY261 (Business Studies) in Shannon College.
How are applicants assessed?
University of Galway recognises certain QQI/FET/ FETAC Level 5 and 6 qualifications as pathways to a number of its undergraduate programmes. In order to be considered for a place on these programmes, students are required to have completed the requisite Level 5 or Level 6 course and hold a minimum of five distinctions (i.e. 80% or greater) in the requisite modules. What happens if I am successful and accept a place at University of Galway?
Registration: late August to late September.
Registration details will be provided via email to all students after the Leaving Certificate results are released.
Our Transitioning to University Programme (TUP) will run in late August, and you be sent the relevant information by email in July 2026 and invited to register as a student online. This is in addition to the Main Campus Student Orientation which usually occurs the first week in September.
