Biography

Martina is a Lecturer in Nursing at the National University of Ireland, Galway, an Adjunct Lecturer in University College Dublin and is currently a research fellow with Evidence Synthesis Ireland working with mentors Dr. Noah Ivers and Dr. Geremy Grimshaw on a Cohrane review ‘Audit and feedback: effects on professional practice and healthcare outcomes’. Martina graduated as a Registered General Nurse from the Institute of Technology Tralee in 2007 and a Public Health Nurse from NUI Galway in 2010.  Martina completed a Master in Health Sciences (Specialist Nursing) at NUI Galway in 2013 and completed a PhD Scholarship at University College Dublin in 2019.  Martina’s research focuses in fields of public health nursing, metric development, quality measurement and improvement.  Her methodological areas of expertise are in qualitative, ‘modified Delphi’ and mixed methods.  Martina had various nursing and project officer roles within the Health Service Executive, most recently developing and implementing Nursing and Midwifery Quality Care-Metrics and implementing the National Healthy Childhood Programme.

Research Interests

Martina's PhD research specifically looked at the exploration of mothers' and PHNs' views of the care provided at the first postnatal visit, followed by a ‘modified Delphi’ study to develop a Quality Care-Metric specifically to measure the practice of the PHN at the first postnatal visit and finally the pilot implementation of this metric resulting in a metric that is feasible, acceptable, reliable, valid and sensitive to change.  Results illuminated differences in PHN practice, the requirement for a national policy in relation to the first postnatal visit and the need for continuous professional development.  Recommendations for education, practice, policy development and further research illuminated. Other research interests include quality improvement, quality measurement, change management, implementing change in healthcare settings, documentation practices, leadership and project management.  Interests span across primary care, public health nursing, child health and maternal health.  Interests also include qualitative and quantitative research designs with a particular interest in the use of the Delphi technique to combine evidence based literature and expert consensus.
