The Visual Intelligence Unit is dedicated to advancing research at the intersection of computer vision and responsible usage of artificial intelligence. It focuses on developing cutting-edge methods for analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing visual data to uncover deeper patterns and actionable insights. The unit fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across computer science, health, engineering, and neuroscience, creating innovative solutions that bridge technology and human understanding. By integrating fundamental research with real-world applications, the unit aims to drive breakthroughs in areas such as healthcare imaging, visual analytics, automotive technologies, cybersecurity, smart city systems, and human-computer interaction, while fostering an environment that inspires curiosity, creativity, and technical excellence.

The unit will directly support DSI’s mission by driving excellence in interdisciplinary research (e.g. computer science, medicine), fostering impactful collaborations (with in UoGalway, in Ireland, and internationally), and advancing international recognition in visual data sciences and analytics. Through sustainable partnerships and diverse funding opportunities, the unit strengthens the institute’s long-term research ecosystem and societal impact.
