Pav-Analytics -Intelligent Pavement Condition Rating System for Cycle Routes and Greenways (iPSRS)

Principal investigator: Ihsan Ullah
Programme: SFI National Challenge Fund - OurTech Challenge
Start Date:  01/06/2023
Finish Date:  30/03/2025

Project Website:  https://www.sfi.ie/challenges/ourtech-challenge/pav-analytics/

Aim & Objectives:

The proposal highlights the need for an effective system to monitor and maintain cycle and walking pathways in cities and on long-distance routes. Traditional road survey methods may not be suitable for these pathways, which have unique characteristics and lack traditional road infrastructure. The proposal calls for the development of an intelligent data collection and assessment system that provides accurate and up-to-date information on pathway and cycleway conditions. This system will include a sensing device, a rating scale, and a data analysis software framework using big data and AI tools. The proposal also uses a crowd-sourcing model where volunteers, freelancers and/or active travelers like cyclists will collect data, providing a larger and more diverse data source than manual inspections or periodic surveys. Data privacy is protected through encryption. This proposal supports the National Challenge Fund's OurTech Challenge to make cycling and walking safer and more accessible, and to promote digital transition to strengthen connections between people, communities, and the government. By providing reliable data to local authorities, better pathway and cycleway planning and maintenance can be achieved, making them safer and more enjoyable for users.
