Health Data Science is both a primary and an enabling discipline, a fundamental requirement of all quantitative research in health, upon which the validity and integrity of research findings are dependent. The ability to think statistically is of critical importance in all areas of research that have an evidence base at their core.

Researchers in the Cluster are developing theoretical and applied methods in statistical modelling, clinical trials design and analysis, functional data analysis, sensors and wearables, bioinformatics, sports analytics, climate change, epidemiology, cancer genomics, precision medicine and translational statistics.

As a research active environment with a collaborative focus, the influence of the Cluster extends across the entire university.

  • Teaching: undergraduate and postgraduate programmes benefit from research led teaching that provides the theoretical underpinning of all programmes that encompass data analysis.
  • Collaboration: an integral component of quantitative research across colleges and research centres critical to many grant applications and research outputs which could not be achieved without health data scientists as collaborators.

The ethos of the Cluster is directly aligned with the Excellence value of NUI Galway’s Shared Vision Strategic Plan 2020-25 which aims to build on Galway’s reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for medtech, data science, culture and creativity, climate and oceans, public policy, and innovation.  The Cluster has an impressive international outreach with collaborators in the US, UK, …

The purpose of our research and innovation is to improve health and well for all.

Strength in Numbers

The breadth, depth and interdisciplinarity of our expertise, both fundamental and applied, is evident based on our considerable success in attracting grant funding and the resulting completion of high-quality health data science research on campus, nationally and internationally.   Details on our research income, publications, citations and software downloads are available on the Research Outputs section.

In particular, members of the group play a pivotal role as the only statisticians at Insight and CURAM, the university flagships for Data Science and Medical Devices.
