Course Overview

The Irish Fieldschool of Prehistoric Archaeology has been delivering NUI Galway accredited excavation, survey and experimental archaeology courses since 2015. We aim to provide practical hands-on education while conducting cutting edge research into prehistoric societies. We want our students to understand our research questions, think critically about the techniques we employ and fully engage in the interpretive process.

Our experimental archaeology course concentrates on Bronze Age technologies. It is primarily an experiential course, during which students become familiar with materials that were available in the Bronze Age and the techniques used to work them. We have a particular focus on Bronze casting, especially lost-wax technique casting. The course is eight hours a day for five days. It includes lectures on the Irish Bronze Age and workshops on bronze casting.

Our experimental course is 1 week-long and takes place in the Craggaunowen, an archaeological open-air museum in Co. Clare. The course is delivered by Dr Ros Ó Maoldúin, our site director and an expert on the Irish Bronze Age. All materials are provided, and students are permitted to take a selection of what they make away with them. Should students wish to get academic credit for this course they will need to complete a 1500 word written essay within a month of finishing the course. Appropriate readings are provided for this.

Course Modules

Experimental Archaeology (1 week) 3 Semester Credits/6 ECTS Credits

The one-week experimental archaeology course will concentrate on later Bronze Age materials and include workshops on bronze casting and pottery production and takes place in the Craggaunowen, an archaeological open-air museum in Co. Clare.

The course is delivered by Dr Ros Ó Maoldúin, our site director and an expert on the Irish Bronze Age, and Dr Billy Mag Fhloinn our lead experimental archaeologist.
