Celebrating Twenty-Five Years

Celebrating Twenty-Five Years

The Access Centre at the University of Galway celebrated 25 years of helping people find pathways into higher education. Since its foundation in 1999, the Access Centre has supported over 3,500 individuals, with increasing numbers of students from traditionally underrepresented groups entering university. The centre offers a supportive educational environment, preparing students academically and personally for full-time undergraduate degrees.

The anniversary celebrations began on Thursday, 23rd May, with Mayor of Galway Councillor Eddie Hoare unveiling a plaque at the Access Centre offices. This was followed by the Uni4U Graduation, a programme that provides sixth class pupils from Deis and Link primary schools in Galway with a taste of university life. On Friday, Dr Daniel Savery, Widening Participation Officer, outlined our efforts to increase equality of opportunity for students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

An outstanding panel of student speakers shared their personal experiences, and we reflected on local and national access perspectives from 25 years ago. The celebrations concluded with an Alumni BBQ on Saturday at Sult.
