What is the 1916 Bursary Fund?
The 1916 Bursary aims to encourage participation and success by students who are most socio-economically disadvantaged and from groups most under-represented in higher education.
It is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union. Bursaries are awarded through regional clusters of higher education institutions. Each cluster has a limited number of bursaries which are awarded to the eligible applicants that present the greatest need.
Who can apply?
To be considered for a bursary, applicants must meet college entry, financial and target group eligibility criteria.
Applicants must:
· Show that their household income meets the criteria for the SUSI Special Rate of Maintenance Grant which has 3 thresholds
· Be from one or more of the priority groups
· Be a new entrant pursuing an undergraduate course and progressing to higher education for the first time
· Have been a resident in the Irish State for three of the past five years
· Be studying an approved full-time or part-time undergraduate course.

What is the value of a 1916 Bursary?
Students eligible for the Bursary will be awarded under one of three tiers.
· Tier 1: €5,000 per year for the normal duration of an undergraduate programme.
· Tier 2: €2,000 per year for the normal duration of an undergraduate programme.
Tier 1 & Tier 2 bursaries may also be paid if the awardee progresses to postgraduate study.
· Tier 3: Awardees will receive a once-off bursary of €1,500 for the 2025/26 academic year only.
1916 Continuing Students
1916 Bursary students who are continuing in their studies in 2025/26 will be contacted early in September with information about their 1916 funding for 2025/26 AY.
Any student who is in currently in receipt of a 1916 Bursary but who is repeating a year, taking a leave of absence, withdrawing, or if, for some other reason, is not progressing to the next year of their course in the 2025/26 academic year should notify the 1916 Bursary Team
