Description:

The Centre for the Investigation of Transnational Encounters (CITE) is a specialized centre for research on transnational links and historical comparisons between the world's regions and societies at different times, with a specific emphasis on the modern period.

The Centre's primary objectives are the following:

  • To promote and support research on transnational links and comparisons between past societies carried on by its members and resulting in academic outputs in the form of peer-reviewed publications (i.e., Roisin Healy and Enrico Dal Lago, eds., The Shadow of Colonialism on Europe's Modern Past, Palgrave 2014; Kevin O'Sullivan, ‘Humanitarian encounters: Biafra, NGOs and imaginings of the Third World in Britain and Ireland, 1967-70', Journal of Genocide Research, 16:2-3 (2014), pp. 299-315).
  • To provide a forum for academic discussion and initiatives leading to major events investigating transnational links and comparisons between past societies, such as international conferences (i.e., ‘Small Nations and Colonial Peripheries in World War I', International Conference held at the Moore Institute, NUI Galway, on 13th-14th June 2014).
  • To provide a forum for public awareness of the importance of transnational links and historical comparisons between Ireland and other countries in the modern past.
