Program
What research areas does the MedDevDoc program include?
The program is broadly in medical device research and development. The projects will encompass research themes of Biomaterials and Drug Delivery, MedTech AI, Machine Learning, Medical Imaging and Soft Robotics, Immuno-Engineering, and Education and Public Engagement (EPE) and Science Advocacy Programmes.
Studentships
What is the duration of a fellowship?
MedDevDoc studentships are of 4 years duration. MedDevDoc students must undertake a non-academic industry secondment for six months for their multi-sectoral training.
Where are the studentships based?
PhD will be based at one of CÚRAM’s academic organisations: University of Galway (GALWAY), University College Dublin (UCD), The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University of Limerick (UL), Dublin City University (DCU), Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), University College Cork (UCC), National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) and Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). The studentship also includes a secondment period (up to 6 months maximum) to a non-academic research organisation.
What is the start date of the Fellowships?
Students recruited in Call 1 should start in November 2024 onwards.

How many studentships are available in Call 1?
There are at least 15 positions available, of 25 open across the MedDevDoc Programme.
When does Call One close?
Call 1 will close to applications on 15th April 2024 (the online application system completes submissions at midnight Irish time).
Applying
Who is eligible to apply?
MedDevDoc is open to candidates who have a 1st class or a 2:1 honour first degree and have/are due to obtain a Master’s in Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, Cell Biology, Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline from different genders and nationalities. They must not already have a doctoral degree. Medical Doctors are also invited to apply if they can demonstrate an understanding of the clinical or life sciences research process.
What should I do if I need clarification on whether my subject is eligible for funding in the program?
Please email the programme manager a short project summary at najmeh.abtahi@universityofgalway.ie and meddevdoc@curamdevices.ie, The Programme Manager (PM) will reply within a few days to let you know whether you can apply.
How do I apply?
To apply, you should develop your research proposal with a PI (principal investigator) from those featured on the online application system. You must then register and submit your application via the online application system. The Guide for Applicants, downloaded from the website, contains further information on the steps and application templates.
Can I submit my application in a language other than English?
No, only applications written in English can be accepted.
