2024 Skin Deep: Innovative Tools and Techniques in Research
Location: Biomedical Sciences Seminar Room 12.30 - 1.15PM
Martina Marchetti-Deschmann is Full Professor for Mass Spectrometric Methods and head of the Institute of Chemical Technologies and Analytics at TU Wien.
She obtained her PhD in Chemistry at the University of Vienna and is working in the field of Analytical Chemistry for over 25+ years. Her research is focusing on mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques. During the last decades MS imaging became an important part of her portfolio, in particular multimodal imaging. Her group was the first lab that combined molecular and elemental imaging in multi-instrument approaches; already in 2018 she showed the combination of MALDI MSI / IR / LA-ICP MSI and the possibility of combining MALDI / LA-ICP MSI and MALDI MSI / XRF on one tissue section. In 2023 she introduced the combination of MSI with biomechanical measurements, and a comprehensive workflow for (immuno)histology, lipid, glycan and protein imaging.
Today, Martina is an internationally recognized expert for instrument advances and innovative methodologies to put multi-measurements of a sample into practice to gather comprehensive information down to the cellular level.
Martina seeks to advance mass spectrometric research, education and professionalization. Besides other activities she is board member of the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation (IMSF), founding member and president of MSIS and trustee of IMSIS (joint society: MSIS and IMSS). She published over 147 peer-reviewed articles, 7 book chapters and holds four patents. Martina received the eLearning Award at TU Wien in 2010, was awarded the Beynon Prize from the Journal "Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry" in 2007 and in 2013 the Fritz Feigl Prize by the Austrian Society of Analytical Chemistry (ASAC).
