Niamh Nowlan is Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at University College Dublin. Her research focuses on the role of mechanical forces in prenatal and postnatal development of the bones, joints and spine. The research is contributing to a better understanding of why babies and children suffer from conditions like developmental dysplasia of the hip and metabolic bone disease of prematurity, and the goal is to develop better diagnostic and treatment strategies for such conditions.

Prior to joining UCD in 2021, Prof Nowlan held the position of Reader of Developmental Biomechanics in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, UK, where she maintains an honorary appointment. Before joining the faculty of Imperial College London in 2011, Prof Nowlan held postdoctoral fellowships in the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain and in the Zoology Department in Trinity College Dublin. In 2009, she was a Fulbright scholar in Boston University, USA. Her undergraduate degree (in Computer Engineering) and her PhD were awarded by Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
