Blake's research investigates the role of capital acquisition in the successful commercialisation of medical technologies through university spinout companies. In the last three years, there has a been a decline in the amount of venture capital attracted by spinouts in Ireland. In contrast, Ireland’s life sciences sector has seen massive growth in terms of the amount of venture capital it has attracted. Blake's research aims to compare Ireland's MedTech sector to other leading hotspots around the world (Munich, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Boston, Israel, and Singapore), and further, to identify how different forms of capital (financial, entrepreneurial, and symbolic) affect the success of MedTech university spinouts in each location. Blake’s research interests lie in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology commercialisation.
