Enabling Scaling Success

At the Centre for Entrepreneurial Growth & Scaling (CEGS), we tackle the challenge of supporting the growth and scaling of indigenous and foreign-owned businesses. We support business scaling by identifying the key challenges in attaining successful scaling and providing novel insights in how these can be managed. We do so by engaging in scaling research and translating these insights into practice through our outreach activities.

CEGS was established in 2020 after receiving seed-funding from University of Galway’s Strategic Fund, the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, and the Western Development Commission. CEGS is now recognised nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for business scaling research and outreach. It is the only UKI-based partner of the European Scale-up Institute (ESI), providing a platform for addressing the scaleup gap in Ireland and Europe.

Our Aim

We aim to be a leading European centre of research and outreach for entrepreneurial growth and scaling. Combining our excellence in research, innovative teaching pedagogies and outreach, we focus on the post start-up entrepreneurial journey of businesses that have achieved product-market fit and are now striving not just to grow, but to scale their organizations. These businesses are often called scale-ups. Our focus extends to managing their global scaling, including their rapid internationalization and management of international offices.

Why Focus on Scaling?

To solve the world’s many challenges, it is not enough to innovate new solutions to global problems. These solutions must be delivered, globally. Since incumbent firms tend to be slow to adopt new solutions that they did not invent themselves, young challenger firms attempt to fill the gap. But to do so, they have to scale rapidly and globally, and this is highly challenging, especially for management teams that have not done this before. We still have much to learn about scaling and also much to impart to those who are taking up this challenge.

Our work, therefore, can help address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and all the challenges identified in Horizon Europe. Because it is not enough to innovate solutions: you must deliver them too.
