About BCNI
About the BCNI
What is the BCNI?
BCNI is a national clinical research network that benefits blood cancer patients in Ireland. BCNI offers early stage clinical trials to blood cancer patients, providing the opportunity to test new, potentially life-saving treatments and drugs. BCNI has also established a biobank and blood cancer registry, which are facilitating research to increase our knowledge and expertise in the field of blood cancer research and ultimately improve patient outcomes. BCNI is funded by the Irish Cancer Society and Science Foundation Ireland.
Who are the BCNI?
BCNI is a collaborative network of clinicians, scientists, and population health experts with a shared interest in blood cancer research. Members of the national network are based at the National University of Ireland Galway / University Hospital Galway, University College Cork / Cork University Hospital, Trinity College Dublin / St James's Hospital, The National Cancer Registry Ireland, Beaumont Hospital and The Mater Hospital. The key investigators involved are Dr Eva Szegezdi, Dr Philip Murphy, Professor Michael O’Dwyer, Professor Mary Cahill, Professor Paul Browne, Professor Kerri Clough-Gorr, Dr John Quinn and Professor Peter O'Gorman.
What we do?
Our aim is to improve outcomes for people with blood cancer. We do this by providing blood cancer patients in Ireland with access to novel and innovative cancer treatments through the establishment and running of early phase clinical trials. We also collect information and samples from blood cancer patients in Ireland in order to improve our understanding and to uncover new ways to combat this disease.
Why we are novel and innovative?
BCNI has brought together clinical researchers in Cork, Dublin and Galway to form a national unit for carrying out early phase clinical trials in blood cancers. This national unit, combined with a dedicated biobank and patient registry, has created a critical infrastructure making Ireland more competitive internationally in blood cancer research, which is enabling us to attract more trials and ultimately lead to improvements in patient outcomes.
