Biography

Dr. Soumyajyoti Maji is currently a Lecturer in Medical Electronics at the University of Galway. Before joining the University of Galway, Dr. Maji gained industry experience as a Product Development Engineer at Intel R&D Ireland, where he worked for a year from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, he transitioned back to academia as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University, USA. During his time at Harvard, Dr. Maji ventured into the dynamic intersection of electrophysiology and neuroscience. He made contributions to the development of somatosensory electrical stimulation systems designed to benefit individuals with conditions such as diabetic neuropathy and stroke.

Dr. Maji's earned his Ph.D. degree in low-power biomedical circuit design from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, Ireland, in 2021. Prior to this, he completed his M.Eng.Sc. degree in electronic and computer engineering at University College Dublin, Ireland, in 2016 and the B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, India, in 2015.

At present, Dr. Maji's research is centered on several critical areas. He specialises in low-power bioinstrumentation tailored for continuous health monitoring. Additionally, he is involved in the development of flexible sensors for physiological monitoring and contributes to the creation of assistive devices for neurorehabilitation. Dr. Maji was awarded with the Best Graduate Paper award at the prestigious 2018 IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications (MeMeA) held in Rome, Italy.

Furthermore, he has actively contributed to academic events and knowledge sharing as the Technical Chair (Organizer) of a special session titled 'Wearable Devices for Physiological Monitoring' during the 2020 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Industry 4.0 & IoT. Dr. Maji also plays a crucial role in the academic community by serving as a reviewer for respected journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation & Measurement (TIM) Journal, IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits & System) Journal, IEEE Sensors Journal, and Biomedical Physics & Engineering Physics (IOP)

Prospective PhD students: Those who are interested in pursuing a PhD in any of the aforementioned research areas should initially get in touch with me via email to discuss a project of interest. Following this, they should formally submit an application for postgraduate studies to the University of Galway. Applicants are expected to showcase outstanding academic performance at the undergraduate and/or master's level, along with an inclination or experience in low-power bioinstrumentation, electrical characterization, sensors, instrumentation, and embedded machine learning. Candidates should hold a degree in a Science or Engineering discipline (Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering) and be ready to collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment.

To Apply for the 2024 IRC PhD Scholarship (https://research.ie/funding/goipg/): Send me
an email (preferably before 30/09/2023) with an expression of interest (your research interests and achievements, motivation to do a PhD in these aforementioned areas, your career goals, etc.) comprising a detailed CV and academic record.
