Biography

Ms Claire Quinn, RGN, MSc, BNS (hons),ONC. PGDip Palliative Care
Claire Quinn was appointed Lecturer (0.4) to the School of Nursing and Midwifery, National University of Ireland, Galway in 2016.  Claire has been involved in a locum capacity with the School of Nursing since 2010 and was initially appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer in 2014. Claire is currently Programme Director for the Children's Palliative/Complex Care Programme and lectures at undergraduate level on palliative care.
Claire has a extensive clinical and executive management experience in general and community nursing in the UK, Canada and Ireland and has held positions as Clinical Nurse Specialist within two specialities. She has been involved in Nurse Education since 1997 undertaking Clinical Education modules.
Claire has been at the forefront of developments around palliative care since her work within paediatric disability/oncology and specialist community palliative care and has been an active advocate in the development of children's palliative care as an emerging speciality. Claire was a Ministerial appointment (2006-2010) to the National Policy for Children's Palliative Care (now currently known as the Special Advisory Group in Children's Palliative Care 2011-2021)) and participates on the National Development Committee (Chaired by the HSE) and Special Policy Advisory Group for Children's Palliative care charged with overseeing policy implementation. 
Claire lectures at undergraduate and post-graduate level on nursing practice, nursing management, adult and child palliative care. She is supervisor and examiner for the MHSc research programmes and has led and participated on several national children's palliative care research studies to date. This work is supported through a commitment to evidence based practice and dissemination as evidenced as Co-Chair/Organiser of the International Paediatric Palliative Care Conferences held in Ireland two yearly. 
Claire led on the design and implementation of Ireland's first Children's Palliative and Complex Care MHSc for nurses working in Hospital and Community settings established by NUI Galway. This one- of -a -kind -programme has grown significantly is now entering the sixth year. The programme has a scholarship attached and additionally has attracted attention from national and international applicants from all disciplines and backgrounds. This new programme was nominated for two prominent awards by Gradireland.

Research Interests

Experienced in Qualitative Descriptive Methodology. 

Lead for project team using Delphi methodology.

Experience in utilising Classic Grounded Theory Methodology. Have evidenced the rich value of this approach to complex areas and issues previously not understood or explored.

Working expertise within NUI Galway with Quality Evidence Systematic review methodologies.

Progressing expertise in the use of NVivo for complex data management, navigation, analysis and storage.

National advisor/ consultant on ethical Issues in children's palliative care research. Provide support to internal and external postgraduate research students. Chair of previous REC Committee. have been asked to present internationally on the challenges of research for Irish children's palliative care.

Developing expertise through Doctoral studies with Community Based Participatory Research and Public Partnership and Engagement for vulnerable groups.

Member of the NUIG , SONM PPI Subgroup.

Concerns around complex issues in HCP gatekeeping within palliative care research- would like to explore this  challenge to data collection and access more thoroughly in the future.
