Indigenous Arts Exploration at University of Galway

This module offers participants the opportunity to explore the evolution of the indigenous art forms of Ireland, through the media of music, film, drama, song, oral presentations and performances.

A core element of the module is its emphasis on the Irish language and its links to traditional art forms, culture, and identity.‌ Class contact time consists of lectures, workshops, performances, audio-visual presentations, and discussion of selected readings over ten weeks. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with the practices of traditional song and dance during workshops.

The traditional art forms that may feature in this course are:

• The performance arts of music, dance, song, drama;
• Written art forms – Irish language poetry, prose [in translation];
• Film – exemplars of Ireland’s indigenous arts in audio and visual media.

This module is only available to Occasional Arts (Visiting) students with the course code OA. Enrolment on this module is capped, and places are awarded on the basis of a personal statement, which is submitted online after their arrival at University of Galway. Class times are Thursdays, 11am-1pm each week for c. 10 weeks. There will be one day-long field trip (c. 9am-4pm) each semester.
