LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT FOR PERIOD ABROAD PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR FINAL YEAR IN A LANGUAGE

To succeed in Final Year in French/German/Italian/Spanish you need a deep understanding of language and society. The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures strongly recommends that modern language students spend an extended period living in a culture where the language is widely spoken. We recommend two ways of doing this

  1. BA (International) including an academic year studying in a foreign University. This year is integral to the BA (International) programme. Students taking two languages may spend a semester in each of the countries where the language is spoken.
  2. Work or voluntary service overseas which would include placements on BA CONNECT programmes or as a foreign language assistant

In exceptional circumstances, the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies, in consultation with the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, may allow a student to spend a shorter period of residence abroad and continue with the BA programme. A student following this route will not graduate with a BA (International).

All students entering final year must have spent at least three months in a country or region where the language they are studying is widely spoken. A student studying two languages must have spent three months in each of the countries where those languages are widely spoken.

The Teaching Council will only register you as a language teacher if you have a relevant degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Education and have lived in a country where the language studied is the spoken language. If you want to register to teach more than one language, you must fulfil these requirements in each language that you wish to teach.

You must provide documentation demonstrating that you have spent the required time abroad before you can register for Final Year. Students who have followed one of the preferred routes (i) or (ii) will be deemed to have satisfied this requirement.
