Biography

Patrick O'Leary is a native of Cork, Ireland and has been working in the School of Chemistry as a lecturer since September 2004. His Previous studies include a Bachelors of Science (B.Sc, 1995) degree and a Ph.D from University College Cork. His Ph.D Research concentrated on the Rhodium (II) Catalysed Buchner reaction. His research consisted of both catalyst study as well as preparation and study of multi-componant dynamic interconverting products. On completion of his Ph.D he was awarded the inaugural Post Doctoral Fellowship in The Sciences from the National University of Ireland in 1999. This Fellowship is awarded after an open competition among scientists throughout Ireland and only one is awarded every two years. This fellowship allowed Patrick to study the use of the Buchner as the key step in a challenging natural product synthesis. On completion of the NUI-postdoctoral fellowship Patrick moved to Utrecht to work in the Department of Metal Mediated Synthesis with Prof. Gerard van Koten and Dr. Bert Klein Gebbink. During the following two years he worked on immobilisation and recycling techniques for chiral homogeneous catalysts. This was achieved via the non-covalent immobilisation of homogeneous transition metal to silica materials.
Since startiong in NUI Galway Patrick has established an active research group in the area of Organic synthesis and asymetric catalysis

His non research work in the University includes Chairing the safety committee of the school, being the schools safety co-ordinator and serving on the safety working group of the university.  He also serves on the academic council as an elected member and on the standing committee of the academic council as the College of Science nominee.  He is also the Royal Society of Chemistry representative in NUI Galway and serves on the ireland section committee of the RSC.

Outside the university Patrick is dedicated to water sports and has been kayaking for more that 20 years and swims regularly. He has represented ireland in canoe polo and more recently in the European (9th) and World (14th) championships in paracanoeing which has recently been included in the Paralympic programme.  In 2016 Patrick was Ireland's first ever representative in the Paralympic games in the discipline of Paracanoe.  Patrick finished 6th in the paralympic games.

Patrick's exposure to sport, chemistry knowledge and experience of Ireland's sport drug testing systems has led him to be a vocal advocate against drug use in sport.  He has given numerous interviews on this and was part of an athlete panel at Sport Ireland's Drug testing unit's report launch for 2017.  He also integrated his chemistry and sport knowledge in a presentation to the Royal college of Surgeons in Nov 2016

Research Interests

ARABOX A Novel Ligand for Asymmetric Catalysis

 

We have recently reported the synthesis of a novel 4,4' Bisoxazoline ligand ARABOX. This novel ligand was synthesised using a tandem deprotection, activation, ring closure (DARC) reaction. We will shortly report on the catalytic activity of a range of catalytic complexes derived from this ligand

 

Catalyst immobilisation


We have published a number of reports of our efforts to develop a facile immobilisation method for oxazoline based catalysts.  These catalysts are easily immobilised on silica and typically maintain their activity.  A number of instances of unusual benefits on immobilisation have also been found.

 

Chiral Amide Ligand Design

We are currently involved in the design and development of a number of new ligand classes and their corresponding transition metal catalysts.  Catalysts are also being tested in a number of key test reactions

We have recently reported on the synthesis of new bisamide ligands and the use of their palladium complexes as catalysts.

 We are developing many other 'families' of catalysts for a wide variety of key organic transformations

Teaching Interests

Patrick has taught general first year chemistry courses since he arrived in Galway.  The current version of this course is engineering Chemistry CH140. 

2nd year Patrick Co-ordinates all of and delivers some of a second semester course CH202.  In addition he runs 3 days of labs for this course per week. 
He also delivers lecture on chemical drawing packages and electronic literature retrieval methods and information management.

3rd year Patrick delivers a lecture course on Mass spectrometry

4th year Patrick delivers a course on Organometallic chemistry, catalysis, organometallic structure.  He has in the past given courses on chemotherapeutic agents.  He also instructs on chemical safety and electronic literature searching and information retrieval.  Two fourth year students do their projects in the SMACT lab each year.
Postgraduate Patrick delivers courses on chemical safety and electronic literature retrieval methods as part of a core skills module for PhD students.  He is also coordinator of Problem solving in chemistry Module CH509 as part of the structured PhD in the School of Chemistry
