Biography

Dr Conan O'Ceallaigh is an Adjunct Lecturer and Research Fellow working with the Timber Engineering Research Group (TERG) at the National University of Ireland Galway. Conan obtained his PhD by investigating the structural design and use of Irish-grown timber in the manufacture of engineered wood products and currently works on the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine funded, SAOLWood and MODCONS Project, focused on the design, development and experimental testing of a sustainable timber building solution to support national needs while also creating export opportunities in the sector. Conan has previously been involved in National and European funded projects, which have focused on the manufacture and structural design of engineered wood products in accordance with Eurocode 5, such as glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT), and their use in multi-story timber construction.

Research Interests

Timber engineering: Structural testing, product development and examining the long-term performance of engineered wood products.

Experimental testing and material characterisation of engineered wood products.
Design provisions for structural timber elements: beams, CLT, connections in Mass-timber construction.
Modular construction methods utilising panalised CLT elements and BIM.
Carbon sequestration in engineered wood products and mass-timber buildings
Coupled numerical methods examining structural behaviour and moisture diffusion in timber. 

Structural engineering: Structural design consisting of timber, steel, concrete, and composite materials.

Computational mechanics: Numerical modelling; Nonlinear analysis, orthotropic materials, long-term/ creep behaviour, moisture diffusion and moisture-induced strain.
