Biography

Maurice O'Connell researches in biostatistics at the HRB Clinical Research Facility, School of Medicine, National University of Ireland Galway.

Maurice's research in biostatistics with Dr John Ferguson and Prof Martin O'Donnell involves building statistical models describing causal relationships in epidemiological datasets to assess disease burden that can be attributed to particular risk factors as well as predict the possible consequences of health care interventions. This research is funded by the Health Research Board (HRB) in Ireland.

Prior to taking up his position in NUI Galway, Maurice researched and lectured in the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick (2014 -2019), the Department of Accounting & Finance in the Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick (2012 -2014) and the Munster Technological University (2019). Maurice held a research position in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Limerick (2013). Maurice has also worked as a post-primary teacher of mathematics in Ireland (2008 -2012). Maurice trained as a Consultant Actuary with Standard Life in Dublin (2003) and Aon Hewitt in Cork (2004-2008)

Education:

PhD (Health Economics & Statistics), Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick.
Supervisors: Professor of Health Economics John F Forbes, Professor of Statistics Cathal D Walsh and Dr Sara Hayes (Physiotherapy).
(2014 – 2019).

Postgraduate Diploma in Education, University College Cork (2008 -2009).

Institute & Faculty of Actuary Examinations in the United Kingdom & Ireland (2004-2008).

Bachelor of Science in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, Dublin City University (2000 - 2004).
