Biography

Dr. Maureen Kelly is a lecturer in General Practice with the Medical School, NUI Galway and Assistant Programme Director of the Western Training Programme in General Practice, HSE West. She is Vice Dean of Civic Engagement for the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, having previously served as College Representative with the Community Knowledge Initiative.  

She has over twenty years of experience as a clinical educator at undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty development levels. Her special interests include community engagement, teaching and assessing communication skills, professionalism and medical education. She chairs a College wide educator development forum known as the Progressive Alliance of Clinical Educators (PACE).   Each year she organises and teaches at a weekend educational meeting, Teachers in General Practice, where busy GP teachers can network and learn about up to date methods for teaching medical students and doctors training in General Practice. 
She contributes significantly to the fourth year undergraduate teaching programme and for many years directed the GP module.   She delivers an innovative Special Study Module, for first year medical students teaching Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation to national school children.  A unique feature of this module is that the teaching is conducted through Irish in Gaeltacht national schools and Gael Scoileanna. 

Her research interests are 1) Selection and widening diversity in medicine (which was the subject of her PhD) and 2) Building capacity in academic GP. In keeping with these she leads the mature entry route to medicine.  She also established and leads the Clár Ambasadóireachta Scoil an Leighis, an schools outreach programme aimed at encouraging and supporting Gaeltacht pupils interested in a career in medicine. 
She developed and leads the Academic Module in General Practice-a mentorship and supervision programme for GP registrars with an interest in GP education or research, based within the Discipline of GP, NUI Galway.  She also established and leads a research training module for third year GP registrars, supervising a number of research projects annually. 

She is Treasurer and executive member of the Association of University Departments of General Practice in Ireland (AUDGP).  She is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners, International Network for Researchers in Selection into Healthcare, the Association for the Study of Medical Education, the Association for Medical Education in Europe, National Association of Programme Directors, and Medical Council Register of Medical Specialists (General Practice).   She is an Associate Editor with BMC Medical Education and reviewers for several leading medical education journals.  

Research Interests

Maureen's primary research interests are in the field of medical education.  The focus of her recent PhD in Medical Education was the validity of the Health Professions Admission Test Ireland and Multiple Mini Interviews as selection tools for undergraduate medical students. Her expertise in medical student selection is internationally recognised: she is a regular presenter at medical education conferences, collaborates with leading selection experts in the UK and is a member of the International Network for Researchers in Selection into Healthcare. She is an Associate Editor with BMC Medical Education and reviewer for several of the highest impact medical education journals.  Her Masters in Medical Education, Dundee evaluated the impact of a new undergraduate communication skills teaching programme.  She has published a practical guide for teaching communication skills. She has researched how professional attitudes can be taught and assessed at undergraduate level.  She has supervised research theses on both the Masters in Primary Care and Masters in Clinical Education programmes.  She set up and delivers a taught module on Research Methods to Third Year GP Trainees and supervises their research projects each year on a variety of GP related topics.
