Research Interests

My research interests include epistemology and metaphysics in modern philosophy with particular emphasis on Kant and Nietzsche. I am especially interested in how these historically situated approaches intersect with contemporary debates. Through my work on Nietzsche's will to power thesis and his critical engagement with Kant, I have developed a strong interest in the metaphysics of causal powers and dispositions in both an historical and contemporary context. I am currently exploring issues of essentialism and non-essentialism, naturalism and causality in Nietzsche's metaphysics. I have previously examined how Nietzsche's metaphysics, meta-ethics and philosophical psychology contribute to contemporary debates around anti-realist and realist approaches to value.

I also have an interest in issues pertaining to the metaphysics of value, more broadly. Drawing on the resources of historical and contemporary perspectives, I explore questions surrounding the phenomenology of value and what kind of property, if any, a value might be and whether the metaphysics of dispositions can assist in answering this question.

My research interests dovetail with my role as primary editor of the ‘Values and Identities’ series published by Rowman and Littlefield International:https://rowman.com/Action/SERIES/_/RLIVAI

I am currently supervising doctoral students writing on the value of knowledge problem, in addition to projects on both Nietzsche's metaphysics and his philosophy of mind, freedom and agency.
