Biography

Professor Nicholas Canny, a historian, was a Member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council, 2011-2016.  He was founding Director of the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies 2000-2011 (www.nuigalway.ie/mooreinstitute) at National University of Ireland Galway, and was President of the Royal Irish Academy, 2008-2011. He held the Established Chair of History at NUI, Galway, 1979-2009 and served the university as Vice President for Research, 2005-2008.

A Galway graduate, he took his Ph.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania supported by a Ford Foundation Fellowship, and studied also at the Institute for Historical Research of the University of London. He had held post-doctoral appointments at Harvard and Yale universities, at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, at the National Humanities Center, and at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies. He was professeur invité at the École des Hautes Études, Paris, Spring 2005, and in 2005-2006 was Parnell Senior Research Fellow at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.  He took up his appointment to the Scientific Council of the European Science Foundation in February 2011. 

The author or editor of 11 books and author of over 70 published papers, Nicholas Canny specialises in the histories of Ireland, Britain, Colonial British America and Europe Overseas during the early modern centuries. He was awarded the Irish Historical Research prize of the National University of Ireland on two occasions (1976 and 2003) for books on the history of early modern Ireland. He is currently working on English and French writings on the Natural History of the West Indies, 1580-1720.  His contribution to the history of Early Modern Ireland was marked by Reshaping Ireland, 1550-1700: Colonization and its Consequences; Essays Presented to Nicholas Canny, ed., Brian Mac Cuarta, SJ (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2011).  He was in 1995, elected member of the Academia Europaea, in 2005 as a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, in 2007 as a Member of the American Philosophical Society, and in 2013 as a Corresponding Member of the Real Academia de la Historia (Madrid).
