Biography

Irena is an expert phonetician and a specialist in voice analysis. She studied phonetics and linguistics at St. Petersburg State University (Russia) where she completed a PhD in Phonetics (2001) and where she taught English phonetics for a number of years. She came to Trinity College Dublin in 2002 as a visiting researcher and continued research at the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory, TCD, where she completed a PhD in Phonetics on the topic of voice quality correlates of emotion and affect (2010). Her research concerns voice quality and its use in communication. Her research expertise is in the analysis of the voice source using inverse filtering and source parameterisation and in conducting perceptual tests. She has been teaching phonetics and phonology and instrumental phonetics to the students of linguistics and speech and language therapy both in Trinity College Dublin and NUI Galway. She is also interested in clinical phonetics and clinical applications of acoustic analysis as well as in methodological aspects of research.

Research Interests

  • Segmental phonetics and phonology
  • Phonetic variation and change
  • Phonetic transcription
  • Speech acoustics
  • Voice source analysis and parameterisation
  • Voice source in spoken communication: linguistic and paralinguistic (affective) prosody
  • Vocal expression of emotion and affect; cross-language perception of affect in voice quality
  • Clinical applications of phonetics and speech science
