Biography

Dr Collette Mulkeen is a postdoctoral researcher in the department of Microbiology and Ryan Institute at NUI, Galway. Her broad research interests span ecology, biodiversity, conservation and water/wastewater research. Collette graduated with a BSc in Environmental Science from NUI Galway in 2003 followed by ten years working in industry. In 2014, Collette returned to carry out her EPA funded PhD entitled "Biodiversity and performance of constructed wetlands; a comparison with natural wetlands" under the supervision of Dr Mark Healy and Professor Mike Gormally. Collette joined the SFI research professorship Innovative Energy Technologies for Biofuels, Bioenergy and a Sustainable Irish Bioeconomy (IETSBIO3) in 2018, and is currently researching the phytoremediation potential of constructed wetlands for selenium rich wastewater with Professor Piet Lens. Collette is also actively involved in science communication and outreach.

Research Interests

Sustainable wastewater treatment
Constructed wetlands for water pollution control
Wetland ecology and conservation
The use of biological indicators of habitat quality
