Manufacturing technology provides the means for society to manufacture/ supply products to meet the needs of modern society. Manufacturing technology in this module covers:
• Engineering materials including metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials.
• Manufacturing processes, both traditional and recently developed.
• Electronic manufacturing technologies.

Manufacturing companies have to keep up with best practices to meet the demands of the market place. These demands are getting harder to meet for two reasons:

  • Products have a shorter life cycle.
  • Customers are demanding higher quality.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the fundamental principles of manufacturing technology.
  2. Identify the materials used in manufacturing, manufacturing processes, production systems and trends in manufacturing.
  3. Explain the nature of materials, mechanical and physical properties and the use of dimensions, tolerances and surfaces.
  4. Apply ethics, respect and responsibility in the manufacturing of products for customer use.

Evaluate how manufacturing meets the environmental demands of today’s market place.
